The word Whanau means family and community, and that idea runs through everything we do. We are Whanau Day Nursery, an independent setting at Trevelyan House on Church Road, caring for children aged three months to five years.

A nursery should fit naturally into the rhythm of family life, and ours does. Sitting in central Welwyn Garden City, we are close to the mainline station, so parents heading into London or across Hertfordshire can manage drop-offs and pick-ups without adding stress to an already busy morning.
To fully support working schedules, we are open from 07:30 to 18:30, Monday to Friday, making the morning routine as smooth and seamless as possible for commuting families.
Trevelyan House feels woven into the city around it, and children grow up knowing the place they spend their days is part of something bigger.

We’ve created a journey through childhood, with each room tailored to a unique chapter. Think of the age groups as signposts, not fences.
- Baby Room (three months to one year): A haven of calm and sensory delight. Here, the world unfolds at a gentle pace, filled with soft textures, familiar lullabies, and the comfort of steady, loving arms.
- Wobblers (one to two years): Welcome to the land of first steps and brave new words! This is a world built for movement, where tumbles are part of the dance and every “I can do it!” is cheered.
- Toddlers (two to three years): A bustling hub of questions, creations, and budding friendships. Here, curiosity is the compass, and play is the work that builds language, imagination, and a sense of self.
- Preschool (three to five years): This is where big ideas take flight. A vibrant space where stories are written, numbers come to life, and children gather the confidence and skills they need to soar into school.
- Sensory Room: A magical escape for all. A room of shifting lights, intriguing sounds, and fascinating textures, offering a moment of focused calm or a spark of sensory joy whenever it’s needed.

How We Help Children Learn and Grow
Our approach follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, with play sitting at the centre of it. Children take in so much when they are absorbed and happy, so we plan days that feel joyful while quietly building real skills.

Songs, stories, messy play, and hands-on discovery all help children grow in vocabulary, coordination, and confidence. Outdoor time plays its part too. Our outdoor play area gives children space to run, climb, dig, and connect with nature every day. Fresh air and active play build strength and resilience, and they remain part of nursery life whatever the weather brings.

Healthy meals fuel happy days, so our kitchen team prepares fresh, balanced food on site. We are proud to hold the Food for Life Early Years Award, along with a 5-star kitchen hygiene rating. We see mealtimes as a chance for children to sit together, try new flavours, and build good habits.
Safety underpins all of it. Digital access control doors, intercom systems, and strict collection procedures mean only the right people can enter and only the right people can collect. These measures sit quietly in the background, giving families reassurance and letting children focus on playing and learning.
