Walk through the door of The Laurels on a typical morning and you will hear it before you see it. Laughter from the toddler room. The gentle hum of a key worker reading a favourite story. A little one calling out a cheerful good morning to a member of staff who already knows their name. These small moments are easy to miss, but they tell you everything about who we are.
The word Whanau means family and community, and our name is no accident. When a child joins us, they become part of something warm and connected, and so does their family. We are Whanau Day Nursery Harpenden, a family-owned nursery caring for children from 3 months to 5 years old in the heart of the town.
We want to share what gives our setting its homely feel, why families settle so happily here, and what daily life is really like inside our doors. By the end, you will understand exactly what we mean by “your child will feel at home.”
A Building With Character
Our nursery sits within a beautiful period building at The Laurels on Leyton Road, right in the town centre. The space is bright and full of character, and we have worked hard to make it feel welcoming.
Our rooms are bright and age-specific, with soft flooring and cosy corners arranged at a child’s eye level. Every part of the building has been thought through with children in mind, so they have plenty of space to develop and grow.
For families nearby, and for parents who commute into London, our town centre location helps make daily routines a little easier. We are open from 07:30 to 18:30, Monday to Friday, to perfectly accommodate working schedules, and offer on-site parking to make morning drop-offs seamless.
Rooms for Every Stage
Children grow at their own pace, and we plan our rooms around the needs of the children in them.
- Babies (3 months to 1 year): a calm, sensory-rich room where our youngest children explore gently, supported by familiar routines and faces.
- Wobblers (1 to 2 years): a space built for movement, encouraging first steps and early words.
- Toddlers (2 to 3 years): a vibrant room where language, creativity, and independence develop through play.
- Preschool (3 to 5 years): a room where children build confidence through our school readiness approach.
We also have dedicated sensory and breakout rooms. These calmer spaces give children the chance to reflect, focus in small groups, or simply enjoy a quieter moment when they need one.
Parent Review:
“You can tell all the staff care so much about each child, knowing them all by name every morning when they come in no matter who answers the door!”
— Lauryn F., Nursery Parent
What Families Can Expect From Our Nursery
From learning and outdoor play to mealtimes, communication, and daily care, we want every part of nursery life to feel thoughtful, consistent, and supportive for both children and families.
Learning Through Play
Everything we do follows the Early Years Foundation Stage framework. Children learn best when they are enjoying themselves, so play sits at the centre of our days.
Our team puts real thought into the activities they plan. Messy play, themed weeks, songs, stories, and games all help build vocabulary, coordination, and social skills in a natural way.
As children move into our preschool room, our school readiness approach supports literacy, numeracy, and social independence. This helps prepare them for the transition to local primary schools, so the next step feels natural.
The Indoors Are the Outdoors
We are firm believers in fresh air. Our adventurous outdoor learning space is designed to get children moving, exploring, and using their imaginations. Climbing, running, digging, and discovering the natural world are all part of a healthy nursery day.
Outdoor play is never an afterthought. It supports physical development, builds resilience, and gives children the freedom to test themselves in a safe and supported way.
Freshly Prepared Meals
Our in-house kitchen cooks fresh, healthy, and balanced meals each day. We are proud to hold a 5-star hygiene rating alongside the Food for Life Early Years Award, recognizing our commitment to exceptional early years nutrition.
We see mealtimes as part of the day rather than a pause in it. Sitting together, trying new flavours, and building healthy habits all carry real value.
A Team That Cares
When families talk about what makes Whanau Harpenden special, our team is often the first thing they mention.
Our staff is caring, qualified, and dedicated to the children in their care. We take time to learn each child’s personality, their favourite games, and the small things that bring comfort on a trickier morning.
We invest heavily in our people, holding a Gold Investors in People accreditation, because supported staff are best placed to care for children well. Strong, trusting relationships sit behind everything we do.
Working in Partnership With Families
Being apart from your child during the working day is not always easy, especially in the early weeks. We operate with openness and honesty, and we maintain clear, regular communication.
Through daily updates, photos, and open conversation via our nursery app, parents can see what their child has been up to. We also hold regular development reviews, so families always feel informed and involved in their child’s journey with us.
Parent Review:
“My baby absolutely has the best time everyday, the app updates are so nice when you’re at work and wondering what they’re up to.”

What Feeling Like Home Means to Us
When we talk about a home from home, we mean a place where:
- Children are welcomed and known as individuals.
- Routines feel familiar and reassuring.
- Safety is taken seriously, with digital access control doors, child-proof entry points, and careful collection procedures.
- Families feel listened to and part of a wider community.
- Every child has the space to be themselves.
When a child joins us, they become part of something warm and connected, and so does their family.
