- Problem-solving: Figuring out how shapes fit together, balancing weights, and finding new ways to do things.

How the EYFS Shapes Our Day
We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, which recognises that young children learn best through hands-on, meaningful experiences. Rather than pushing children towards formal learning before they’re ready, we follow each child’s natural curiosity and build on what already interests them.
In practice, that means our team observes carefully and plans based on what they see. If a child becomes fascinated by bugs in the garden, we might bring in magnifying glasses, books about minibeasts, and counting games using little creatures as props. The learning grows from the child, not the other way around.
Tailored Environments for Every Milestone
Babies (3 months to 1 year)
In our baby room, play is gentle and sensory. Our youngest children explore textures, sounds, and familiar faces in a calm, loving space. Something as simple as peekaboo builds trust and early communication, while treasure baskets give tiny hands the chance to investigate the world at their own pace.
Wobblers (1 to 2 years)
Those first steps and first words are huge, and our space gives Wobblers plenty of room to move, try, and try again. Whether they’re toddling after a ball or babbling alongside a friend over a snack, every moment builds confidence and coordination.
Toddlers (2 to 3 years)
This is where you’ll find the Play-Doh, the water trays, and the very important conversations happening in the home corner. Language really takes off at this stage, and we love watching children’s personalities come through in their play every single day.
Preschool (3 to 5 years)
In Preschool, play and school readiness go hand in hand. Our School Readiness programme weaves early literacy and numeracy into engaging activities, so children build skills and confidence without ever feeling pressured. When the time comes to move on to one of Harpenden’s local primary schools, our children tend to walk in ready, settled, and excited.
The Spaces That Make It Possible
We’re proud of what we’ve created at The Laurels. Our nursery is housed in a beautiful period building at 22 Leyton Road, full of character and warmth, and we’ve worked hard to make the spaces inside just as special. Each room is arranged so children can reach resources independently and move between activities freely.
We also have a few dedicated spaces that make a real difference throughout the day:
- Sensory room: A calmer space for gentle exploration of light, sound, and texture.
- Breakout room: Ideal for small-group learning, or for children who simply need a quieter moment to focus.
- Outdoor space: Designed to encourage physical development, exploration, and imaginative play in the fresh air.
We’re firm believers in outdoor play, whatever the season. Mud, puddles, sticks, and leaves are some of the best learning tools. They build resilience, physical confidence, and a real connection with the natural world, and we make space for all of it every day.
A Morning at The Laurels
Picture a typical Tuesday. You walk through the door and hear it before you see it: laughter, chatter, the occasional shriek of excitement.
In the Toddler room, a little group is deep in conversation in the home corner, busily cooking something very important. In the sensory room, one child is lying quietly on the floor watching the lights shift overhead. Out in the garden, two Wobblers are discovering, with great delight, exactly what happens when wellies meet a puddle.
None of it happens by accident. Behind every one of those moments is a practitioner who has thought carefully about that particular child. That’s what good early years practice looks like, and it’s something we’re proud of every day.
